Many of our followers will remember our Doc story from a year ago. Did you wonder what ever happened to Doc? Well Doc has finally completed this chapter of his life and is moving on. Thank you to Chester and Terry for fostering Doc through his initial surgeries and thank you to Katherine for sticking with this boy. Here’s Doc’s story for the past year.
Doc came to Satchel’s Last Resort in January of 2021 after (Manatee County) animal services reached out to us needing help with a cocker spaniel mix who had been hit by a car. We knew that Doc would need a leg amputation due to a severe break to his right rear leg. This procedure was performed successfully. However, we soon became aware that Doc had some other issues related to his trauma. He also had a life-threatening diaphragmatic hernia (a break in the diaphragm that allows abdominal organs to move into the chest) that would also need surgical repair. This was performed and he recovered within a few months. We also noticed that Doc, while in all ways seemed to be a young dog, had cataracts in both of his eyes. We thought this could also be related to the trauma he had endured.
Katherine met Doc shortly after seeing his picture online. She had many friends who had dogs but this would be the first dog of her own. Katherine felt that Doc would be a good fit for her. We talked about Doc’s eyes and explained that there could be some hope for Doc. Katherine agreed to foster Doc until we had his eyesight more thoroughly evaluated and to take him to his veterinary ophthalmology appointment at the University of Florida.
The University of Florida felt confident that Doc would be a good candidate for cataract surgery. This would be Doc’s third surgery within a year. However, this resilient boy made it through, and now he has his vision back. Katherine was committed to Doc from the moment that she had first agreed to foster. She brought him to and from Gainesville for many recheck appointments (a 3-hour drive) after his surgery. She has finally made it official and has adopted sweet Doc. We are so very happy for them both and wish them a healthy, happy life for the future.
Congratulations Doc and Katherine on making it official!
