Satchel's Last Resort

Elsa’s Success Story

Elsa with resident cleaned up

♥ Elsa ♥ This sweet Boxer Mix was found wandering Myakka State Park, emaciated, flea/tick/worm infested by a group of young women on a study assignment. No one would help them, if they took in this dog, she would be euthanized. At only 8 or 9 months of age she was in terrible condition but it was treatable! So, as these girls hid her in their apartment (they were not allowed pets), we started treatment until Satchels had room for her. In no time she was adopted – returned and adopted – returned again, 5 times! It seemed Elsa suffered from severe separation anxiety. Luckily for her she is at Satchels Last Resort, a true “no kill” animal shelter. All of our animals stay with us until they are adopted. We make this commitment to each and every dog and cat we help. The last time Elsa was returned, she seemed excited to see me until I took hold of the leash and she collapsed on the ground in such a depression, I could hardly get her to walk. I promised her that day that she would not leave again until we found someone dedicated to see her through this. Separation anxiety is caused by dogs being abandoned, could be from one time or in Elsa’s situation, several times. And it is treatable, difficult at times, but treatable. Elsa went to obedience class, Canine Good Citizen class, Agility Training and every off site event we had for two years and she excelled in everything. ♥ She loves everyone ♥ Then one day last year, Elsa’s angel called, Lisa from Horizon Bay Memory Care, they were looking for a dog that could work with their residents. With all the training Elsa had she would be perfect! Lisa came out to meet her and we set up an “interview” at Horizon Bay. After careful consideration, Elsa was acc epted for the job of “comfort care specialist”. So, off Elsa goes, as a foster dog, living with Lisa as we work on her transition from the Shelter to Lisa’s home and work. Elsa needed to learn about elevators, stairs, wheelchairs, canes, riding the bus, not to go in the kitchen (a tough one) etc. Lisa was so dedicated and we worked together to make this happen. And so it happened…..Elsa has a job and a place to be loved forever, never alone again. Never give up, right girl?  Nope, never………♥
